Isan Highlights‚ a Road to Vientaine

Itinerary : Much less visited by overseas visitors than other areas of Thailand‚ the northeast is the most traditional region of the country. This package takes you to the far north­eastern city of Nong Khai‚ on the border with Laos. Highlights include the lush forest of Khao Yai National Park a UNESCO World Heritage Site‚ the magnificent Khmer ruins at Pimai‚ handicraft villages and a forest temple famous for mediation.

Day 1 - Bangkok to Khao Yai National park   (-/L/-)

Morning departures for the 2-½ hour drive to Khao Yai National Park. At the foothills of the park take an oxcart ride to experience the former way of life of Thai farmers. Continue to explore the national park by walking along the jungle trail from Pha Kluay Mai to Heo Narok Waterfalls. Time for relaxation and lunch at the Jungle House and then the fun of an elephant-back ride through the forest

Overnight at a nature resort in the foothills of the park.

Day 2 - Khao Yai to Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat) (B/-/-)

Korat, gateway to Isan where the food, dialects and ways of life are different from the central region of Thailand. Afternoon trip to visit Pimai to see the ruins of this famous 10th-century Khmer shrine and then on to the archaeological site of Ban Prasat where human skeletons, ancient weapons, ornaments and other artefacts have been found in pits dating back to prehistoric times. Return to overnight in Korat and some free time to explore the city.

Day 3 - Nakhon Ratchasima                 (B/-/-)

Morning departure for Phnom Rung, the largest and the best restored Khmer temple complex in Thailand and the Muang Tam sanctuary, a brick structure with 5 pagodas surrounded by laterite ponds. In the afternoon visit the Pak Tongchai Silk Center to observe the process of silk production.

Day 4 - Nakhon Ratchasima to Ubon Ratchathani (B/-/-)

Depart by day train* (approximate schedule 11:40-16:45) to Ubon Ratchathani, a major city to the east, not far from the border with Cambodia.

Upon arrival transfer to hotel, then at leisure to explore the town.

Day 5 - Ubon Ratchathani (B/-/-)

After breakfast set off to see the bizarre rock formations and prehistoric paintings at Pha Taem and Sao Chaliang. Continue to the cataracts at Kaeng Tana. In the afternoon visit the famous forest temple and meditation centre Wat Nong Pa Phong.

Day 6 - Ubon Ratchathani to Udon Thani (B/-/-)

After breakfast take a public air-conditioned coach * (approximate schedule 1200-1800) to Udon Thani, the largest city in the upper northeast.

Day 7 - Udon Thani to Nong Khai  (B/-/-)

After breakfast visit the forest temple of Luang Ta Bua and a silk-weaving village. Continue to Nong Khai and transfer to hotel.

Day 8 - Nong Khai to Bangkok or Vientiane  (B/-/-)

Free time to explore this border town on the bank of the Mekong River, its bustling border market and the Friendship Bridge that links Thailand with Laos, before returning to Bangkok by overnight train.

Day 9 - Bangkok (-/-/-)

Arrive Bangkok in the morning. Termination of the tour.

  For those wishing to continue their journey to Vientiane, Laos the program can terminate in Vientiane. Then it will be an 8-day program instead of 9 days.
